Making Custom Patterns and Brushes in Photoshop

Making your own patterns and brushes in Photoshop for design projects is pretty easy, here are some quick tips to get you started creating your own.

Creating Custom Patterns

Open an image you wish to make a pattern from in Photoshop, I used this one that i created from bgpatterns.com.

In the top toolbar go to edit > define pattern. A window will pop up with a box to name your brush, rename it and click OK. You can now set a layer style as pattern overlay that will tile your pattern automatically.

Creating Custom Brushes

The same goes for creating your own brushes in Photoshop.

Open the image you wish to make a brush from, I used free vectors from Neno Design. Opened the .eps file in Photoshop, copied the brush I wanted and pasted it to a new document.

In the top toolbar go to edit > define brush preset and name your new brush. You can now select it from the brush drop down and use it to your hearts content.
